CABG (OFF/ON): Off-pump bypass surgery is a type of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. It takes a blood vessel from one part of your body and uses it to bypass a blocked coronary artery. Unlike traditional CABG, off-pump surgery doesn’t stop your heart or use a heart-lung bypass machine.
On-pump CABG is a time-honoured procedure that is performed while the heart is stopped. The blood supply must be provided to the rest of the body when the heart is stopped. Therefore, surgeons use the cardiopulmonary bypass machine (also known as the heart-lung machine or the pump), an artificial circulation system that does the work of the heart and the lungs.
